Recognize the Color Change in Breast Milk and its Causes

Generally breast milk has a milky white color. However, there are several conditions that can cause changes in the color of breast milk, ranging from the production of milk to the type of food consumed by nursing mothers. The change in the color of breast milk is generally not something to worry about. Even so, nursing mothers still need to understand what color changes in normal and abnormal breast milk.

Normal discoloration of breast milk

The first few weeks after giving birth, the color of breast milk will change. This is caused by changes in breast milk content which is normal. Changes in the color of breast milk take place in several stages, namely:

Yellowish white colostrum

Colostrum is the first breast milk that comes out before delivery until the first few days of birth. The color of colostrum is yellowish white or orange. Colostrum is very rich in protein, vitamins, and immunoglobulins which are important in building the baby's immune system.

The transitional breast milk appears at the end of colostrum production. The color change in breast milk that occurs at this stage is from yellowish white or orange to white. This transition breast milk contains a lot of fat and lactose.

Mature milk is clear, bluish and white

Mature breast milk appears after passing through a transition period. This type of breast milk contains more water than carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Mature milk is divided into two types, namely foremilk which is slightly clear and bluish in color and hindmilk that appears white. Although different, the two types of mature breast milk are very necessary for the growth and development of infants.

Changes in breast milk color that are not normal

Apart from changes in the content of breast milk, changes in the color of breast milk can also be caused by other things outside the body's natural processes. Although the color change of breast milk is said to be abnormal, but generally does not harm the baby. Discoloration of abnormal breast milk is usually caused by food, drinks, or medicines consumed by nursing mothers. The following are some colors of breast milk that are not normal:

1. Greenish

When your milk turns greenish, it is likely that you consume too much green food, such as spinach or seaweed. The change in color of breast milk to green can also be caused by consumption of supplements or diet drugs.

2. Reddish and orange

Reddish and orange colored breast milk can be caused by food or drinks that contain coloring. Examples are red or orange soda, juice, or processed milk.

3. Tanned

Breast milk that turns brown may contain blood, due to a wound on your nipple. But do not worry, because this condition will usually return to normal after a few days and not endanger the baby.

4. Black

Although it is rare, there are some breastfeeding mothers who change the color of breast milk to black. This condition can be caused by the side effects of the minocycline drug, which is actually not recommended for nursing mothers. In general, the various changes in the color of breast milk that are not normal is not a concern. However, if the color change of breast milk occurs protracted, accompanied by itching, pain, or bleeding in the breast, you should immediately consult a doctor to get a proper examination and treatment.
